Meet YODA - Yoda is a male, neutered, and 5 years young! He acts like a big kitten. He loves to play, and knows not to be too rough as he grew up with two young boys. Yoda was first found living under a balcony, all tiny and mal-nourished "runt of the litter". He was placed in a home where he lived happily until recently, un-forseen circumstances have him searching for a new forever home, his family seprated, allergies were an issue. The result was Yoda being some what left behind in a condo probably very close to a trip to the SPCA. FYI- He gives the best head butts and lots of happy feet massages! Pic does not do justice it's super hard to get a good photo of this little guy! He gets along pretty well with other animals considering he'd never seen any before recently. However, he's a little rough for older cats, but young ones, or a ferret would be hilarious to watch!!! He's a great cat with lots of love to give.

This little Frenchie is currently at a shelter in Tiawan and looking for a forever home in Canada. She was found abandoned in a outdoor market in Taiwan around April. Regardless, she is one of the sweetest and happiest little dogs amongst the other rescued dogs at the shelter. She has not let her disabilities discourage her optimism and trust towards people. Loves to cuddle and be petted.

She will be flown to Toronto August 19th and will need somewhere to stay for that night, and someone to pick her up from the airport. Form there she will be picked up and brought to Montreal, where she will need a more permanent foster until a suitable adoptive home is found.

Attention all large breed dog lovers! Naya is is giant schnauzer x bouvier des flandres she is a true gentle giant. She was rescued a while ago because she was brought in to a vet clinic to be euthanized for diarrhea. Since then she's grown into a large, beautiful, diarrhea free girl. It's a miracle what a proper diet can do.

The problem she's having know is the because she is surrounded by other pets (cats, birds, rabbits) that she wants to eat! Her anxiety level has become so high she just can't relax. As much as her owner loves her, they really feel Naya would do better in a home with another dog maybe, but no other pets. Her anxiety is primarily expressed in barking. Training, citronella collars, sonic collars, medication, nothing works she only barks when the other animals... well.. do anything. Along with the help of a behaviorist it is believed that if her circumstances changed the barking would not be an issue anymore. When she's not barking she cuddles like the best of them, sleeps a lot and is a never ending supply of love.

Naya loves taking long walks in the woods or with her gentle leader. She's not a swimmer but enjoys getting her feet wet. She has an ongoing battle with car sickness, but she's mastered short drives, medium length drive are good too as long as she hasn't eaten.

Naya is a great dog she deserves the best, something her current owner cannot provide for her.

This little boy was rescued the other week after he was brought in by his previous owner to be euthanized. Her previous owner wanted to euthanize him because he became allergic to him. Thankfully he was able to be rescued at the last minute, we saved him from being euthanize as literally the euthanol syringe was being pulled up. He enjoys plenty of play time outside his large cage. He is a great bun, and with such a close call deserves a great new family. One that would not even dream of giving her up or euthanizing him. He is a jem, who ever adopts him will soon realize they are the luckiest bun owners ever.

Mr. Jay has been in foster care for almost a year now. His last foster home was planning to adopt him but has recently realized he doesn't fit in their lifestyle. This decision came as quite a suprise to us now we have less than a week to find a new foster or forever home.

Mr. Jay is a nice boy, he's on the large size as far as rabbits go, we think he has some flemish giant in him. Which makes for a great pet! He is great with kids, cats and small dogs.

Your pets will love you for the rest of their lives no matter what happens. Something to think about.

It's high time that we encourage ourselves and others to go vegan (more on that in future postings) and to continue showing support for shelter and rescue nonhuman animals. Eleven Eleven, along with numerous rescues, exist because we are a community of dedicated human beings--the very species that exploits nonhuman animals for profit, for convenience, and for amusement-- and have decided to take responsibility for the colossal mess our species has created for nonhuman beings.

So please think of your nonhuman family members when searching for an apartment. If you are considering adopting, please have a look at your allergies, your roommate and/or human family situation and your lifestyle. By doing so, you prevent a nonhuman being from being disposed of with jaded disregard. You will prevent a nonhuman being from roaming the streets, homeless and faced with the tragic possibility of being kidnapped, mutilated, killed or sold into a devastatingly exploitative practice or institution.

Because they are ill in the early stages, physically broken, of senior age, psychologically damaged is not grounds to have one killed or given away as if they are a toy one no longer has the use of. When we care for fellow human beings, we are there for them through joyous moments as well as through painful ones. Sending a nonhuman individual off to a friend or to their death because one couldn't handle it/has allergies/will be having a child/[insert excuse] is betrayal. The bond between a human and a nonhuman consists of friendship and parenthood. Nonhuman beings will never give up on us. Yet each and every one of the faces brought over to Eleven Eleven are victims of humans who gave up on them. It's high time that this changes. It's high time that we live alongside these individuals as equals.

Charlie Update

We just got this wonderful video update in from Charlie, look how great he is doing! Hard to imagine just a few months ago we were recommend to amputate his right leg with no hope of saving it, well thanks to Dr. Auger and everyone who contributed to saving him we can say he is one happy dog. Although we are still paying off his medical bill (www.elevenelevenanimalrescue.org/Sponsor_an_Animal.html) this makes it all worth it!

This weekend is a busy weekend for Eleven Eleven, it is high seasons and we are in full effect. We have over 20 kittens of all ages and color for adoption, and recently had a pug invasion after a pug breeder decided to retire. We have over 40 animals in our care right now, and each one of them is anxiously awaiting a home of their own.

Maybeline (now Lulu) was dumped at a shelter at 7 months old, where she spent 2 months in a cage until we picked her up. She then spent 2 months with us in a (fantastic!) foster family, and finally 4 months later and now 11 months old.. she was adopted. She is finally able to be the puppy she had to put on hold, and i think its safe to say she looks very happy in her new home.

We recently had an invasion of pugs at 11-11; three wonderful pugs were retired by the breeder who is ceasing to breed (yay!!), and needed somewhere to go ASAP. We snatched them all up to avoid them being given away online for free and ending up in a puppy mill or as breeders again. After 3 years in cages in a garage they are now free and have been enjoying every minute of it, it is now their time to start their life. Respectively; Sushi, Bunny and Bad Boy are all well natured, loving, trouble making pugs and now looking for homes of their own.

There won't be a dull moment with this guy in your life. He is not recommended for kids, but is good with cats and other dogs.

Duke (now named Oliver) was born to a stray mother outside with 5 other siblings. He was destine for a life on the streets and becoming feral. Thankfully we were contacted, and intercepted his fate along with his siblings and mother's. They were all placed in foster care to be socialized and the mother is sweet as can be.

Oliver is the first of his siblings to be adopted, and as you can tell is enjoying his new home already.

Hard to imagine this little angle face could have ever found himself homeless? We unfortunately pet abandonment in Montreal has no limits, not even cute little guys like Leon. He was dumped, found himself scared out of his mind in someones garage and then eventually with us.

Bowser wound up in someone’s garage as a kitten and they occasionally gave him food, so he stayed around for 2 years! Finally 2 days before the elderly couple had to move into an old age home they realized the boxes were packed, couches wrapped in plastic, movers booked but wait, the cat in the garage? At least they remembered him. As they were seeking a cheap place to ‘dispose of him’ they did not want to pay veterinary euthanasia fees, and then came across Eleven Eleven Animal Rescue as a cheaper alternative to ‘dispose him’. Point being, he has been rather neglected for the first two years of his life, but now things have turned around for him and after 6 months in foster care he has finally found a family all to himself.

Cash arrived to us 5 months ago as an emergency 'dump' because his owner was ticketed for having 3 dogs in an apartment. He was only 6 months old, a pet store puppy impulse buy, scared out of his mind because he has no idea what happened to him that day.

He has now found a loving family to call his own, with another friend to play with, big back yard, and a whole family to love him.

Mom + babies need a foster home

Mom + babies need a foster home asap! She has 4 babies, but now also has 2 surrogates. One surrogate is about a week older than the rest of the litter, the other is 2 weeks younger and is being bottle fed 3 times a day (drinks like a champ!), but also left with the mom + litter. Just being bottle fed because the others are too big, and not letting him drink enough.

'Moving Day' and its effects;

It is that time of the year; I am sure you have heard everyone saying this. The ‘moving day’ syndrome. Well I am sure you have heard of it, but let’s put things into reality.

At least 90% of cats in shelters at this time of the year are being euthanized. When I say cats, I mean kittens (regardless of how cute), pure breeds, regardless of temperament. They can sweet can be, and purring right up until the last minute. At this time of the year, there is not much to save them. The sad reality is, there is just not enough space. What kind of world d is this, where a life is terminated cue to ‘space’. This is the reality; there are too many and not enough resources for them.

Dogs are also in the same position; breed, sage, cuteness, all aside.

If you have ever considered fostering, adopting, or donating. Now is the time, lives are on the line. Anything and everything will help. Please talk about this with your friends, co-workers, and family members. Fostering SAVES LIVES, adopting SAVE LIVES. If you are unable to do either, spread the word, play your part. Be the change you want to see in the world. Together, we can do this, we can save these lives.

'Compassion fatigue'

With such a sad reality of homeless pets in Montreal, and nation wide, many people feel helpless. In this field of work we are faced with neglect, abuse, death, and defeat on a daily basis. There is just such an immense number of animals needing help, and not enough resources. Which leaves us knowing as many as we help.. there will always be many more un-helped. Especially when public icons like Maria Carrie tweets a picture of her new puppy 'da baby' born to her female Jack Russle 'Chacha' that she bred beacuse, as she said to Barbara Walters; "I want my dogs to have puppies, they're going to be cute" (See article here). It is people like this, that make me want to give up and spend the day in bed.. instead of waking up at 6am everyday to get a start of the long day ahead (that will probably end at 2am and then start all over).

People ask us, what can we do to help? The answer is simple; if everyone adopted instead of going to a breeder (any pure-bred you wish to purchase can be found in rescues/shelters) and sterilized their pets (instead of waiting for their 'kitten' to have a litter before realizing its time for the 'kitten' to be spayed).. this sad reality would be a thing of the past. Shelters would be empty, dare i say.. us rescuer could go on vacation, take time off (what ever that feels like)? The steps to solve this problem are there, we just need to spread the word and actively get our co-workers, neighbours, family members educated.

Conveniently, after reading the article about Mariah Carey breeding her dog to have cute puppies, and realizing as hard as i work and as little sleep as i get, this problem will never end. I then came across this article "Animal welfare workers cope with compassion fatigue".. dealing with such huge and hopeless issues on a daily basis is hard. Many of us quickly feel extremely overwhelmed with the reality, as it really is an overwhelming problem. This article probably relates to a lot of us who work in this field and feel the same way.

Meet Whiskey

When we were told there is a terrier cross about to be euthanized... we did not expect to pick up this strange looking miniature hyena hybrid. Whiskey was a pet store impulse buy, is 8 months old, and until now spent around 20 hours a day in his crate. When the girl and her boyfriend broke up, Whiskey had no where to go and was on his way to be euthanized. He was rescued, and now in a safe foster home.. but is looking for a home as unique as he is :P

Meet Walker - The get-away pup

Walker is a 3 year old collie, hound, shepherd, god knows what else cross. He grew up in a home with over 40 other dogs, he was a victim of a hoarder. Because of this, he was left traumatized, unsocialized and is now a fully grown 3-year-old puppy that has a whole lot to learn about 'real life'.

Regardless of how terrified he is of all the new things he is now experiencing everyday, he remains gentle, loving and slowly becoming affectionate. He is learning to not only trust, but seek humans.

On Tuesday as he was being walked (and making great progress), unfortunately a truck drove me and scared him. He broke loose and bolted all the way from Westmount to NDG. Within 30 minutes of it happening we had people across the city looking for him, swapped the area with posters and corss-posted online through hundreds of people across Montreal (and as far as Florida!). We did not find him before night fall, and did out last round of looking for him at 12am. Thankfully our extensive efforts worked, and the next morning he had been found hiding between two cars in a garage. We were contacted immediately, as there was probably not a person in the area that did not know we were looking for him. He was returned safe and sound, went to the clinic to make sure he was all right and then was microchipped incase this happens again. He doe have some cuts and scraped on his pads, but other than that is in one piece.

He is now back safely in his foster home and happy to be there! He is also for adoption and looking for a family to see him through the development he needs.

At 4pm on Tuesday June 8th Walker was spooked while being walked and bolted. Last seen at Giraud and St Jacques Street heading towards NDG.

Walker grew up in a hoarding situation, from that was unsocailized and very skittish. Because of this he spooks at anything, despite the fosters best efforts to always keep a tight hold on him.. he managed to break loose. This also means he is scared out of his mind, chasing him, running after him, or any quick movements will make him run faster. He will probably not let anyone approach him.

Allie a kitten raised by squirrels - ADOPTED

She was adopted Monday, hours after we had to transfer her from her foster home to a veterinary clinic as her foster was leaving for the summer and we had no where for her to go. It was a miracle as well, as our hopes were well below low at finding her a home as she would not let anyone touch her. She spent her days following her foster mom around the house like a little duckling, playing with pens and socks like the kitten she is and sitting as close to her mom as possible without touching her. With so many other friendly kittens for adoption in Montreal, she had tough competition and our hopes were low for her.

She is adjusting well to her new home and her adoptive mother has already been able to sneak a good purr out of her!

Meet Rocky the Racoon

Meet Rocky the Racoon, he is a youngin' and was just discovering what life is about when he was caught in a STEEL JAW TRAP in the middle of Westmount! Thankfully he found the help he needed, which did not come from the regular wildlife rescue groups as they had prior commitments tonight. But rather a team of dedicated staff of a veterinary clinic, who take their job outside of the clinic hours (literally). He is resting tonight on I.V fluids, and although he has not broken bones, the foot will probably have to be amputated. Because he was trapped at least a few days, the wound is old and nerve damage extensive.

Monkey needs a foster home ASAP. Like most of our Eleven Eleven cats he was brought in to a clinic to be euthanized on Saturday for no real good reason. Since we do not have any foster homes, we have had to pay to board him at the clinic. He is depressed, and not eating. We have him on appetite stimulants, which is working okay, but he needs to get out before his health deteriorates. 6 years old, neutered, de-clawed, vaccinated, very healthy. All he needs is a little LOVE.

Panda is the funniest and sweetest dog in the world. Her weirdest habit among many is that when she's fed human food she wants it on utensils. She also happens to eat off a fork like a human and without just trying to lick the food off. In this picture she has to lick because she's enjoying the remainder of my snow taffy (which she at first tried to bite like you would with a fork). She's also not allowed on the bed unless I'm feeling particularly generous but when she gets in there she always uses the pillows for her head and ALWAYS pulls the blankets to cover her if I haven't done so already. She's a cutie a half for sure! Best part of my life!

My dog Bee...Bee is a "special" dog ... She is a tomboy...never been too
happy about peeing like a girl...so she started off by backing up a
tree until her butt was in the air and pee UP the tree...Well now, after
many years of experience...she simply raises her butt in the air while
she is walking and pees..."SPECIAL"..lol

My rescue kitty Mia Mau has a Q-tip obesession. She likes to dig them out of the washroom garbage can and play with them. Most mornings i wake up to a Q-tip next to my face. It is quite disgusting, but i love her nonetheless :-)

Salem is a very vocal dog! From whining and talking when he's too excited, too happy, annoyed, bored, sleepy or hungry to barking like the very serious guard dog that he (thinks) he is. When he barks, we tell him no, and he does it a bit lower.

"WOOF!" "No." Woof." "No!" "Wff." "No..." "wbwf." "no!" "bwrvv..." No...." "Bh."

And it goes on and on until he basically just make his huge mouth go pop with air, or blows a raspberry on the floor where he lays down and sighs as a sign of oh-so-tragic doggie drama queen protestation. He thinks he's so badass :) It can get annoying when it takes ten minutes of this after a delivery guy leaves, but IT'S SO CUUUTTE!

Rufus our long time foster bird has been adopted! He's found a great forever home.

His housemate is a female lovebird named Kiwi. So far they are getting along well.

He's extra happy because he gets a lot of time out of his cage, about 4 hours a day to fly!

Kitten Season is here, spring cam early this year and so did 'kitten season'.. we are over flowing and unfortunately over our brim right now in cats/kittens.

We currently have EIGHTEEN kittens for adoption, this week alone we rescued two mothers and their litters from the streets. All of the fosters we have are at their brim, and with summer many are leaving to go home for the summer or on vacation for a few weeks. Our foster homes for cats are at a serious LOW right now. To compensate, we have had to resort to boarding, last month alone we paid well over 100$ in boarding fees.

For us to continue to take in, feed, and treat the growing demand of cats in need at this time of year, we have set up a fund. If you are unable to foster but would like to donate towards housing & feeding a cat for a day, you can do so below.

10$ houses / feeds a cat for 1 day, 20$ houses / feeds a dog for a day.

Brittany finally found her forever home. She was abandoned in an house when her previous owner moved away. He took the cute little new puppy, and left Brittany and another dog behind in the house for god knows how long. Because the city does not have a pound, she was brought straight to a clinic to be euthanized. We picked her up from the clinic, about 2 hours outside of Montreal.. and took her into our care. She has since worked through her separation anxiety, fear issues with men, and other little details. She blossomed into one of the most wonderful dogs we have ever had the pleasure of saving, or meeting.

Yesterday was HER day, we brought her to her new home over and hour east of Montreal. She will now be spending and sharing her life with her new friend a Great Dane! The new family is looking forward to including her in the obstacle classes they do with their current dog. She has a nice house, with a big yard to run in now. Her days of being and underdog are OVER.

Ginny Adopted!

Last weekend we made the trip to Vermont to bring Ginny the mother of 6 Husky puppies to HER forever home.

After a few wrong turns, getting lost, and crappy weather, Ginny (and us) made it to her adoptive home in one piece! A fresh start to a whole new life. Thank you to everyone, supporters, contributors and especially the Montreal SPCA Emergency Shelter volunteers for helping her get to this point.

She is a very loving and nurturing home, with a lot of space to run and finally just be able to enjoy life.

Her new mom says:

She’s doing great, getting used to Vermont and our home. She is a joy to us and I think she has that figured out already.
She is too funny when she doesn’t want to pay attention to us. As I expected with a husky, Ginny definitely has a mind of her own.

New Arrival - Pandora & her babies

Pandora and her babies were rescued yesterday afternoon from outdoors. They grew up under a shed next to a old rail road. Taking this family off the streets, means saving them from a life time of outdoors and therefor producing well over 3, 000 cats between them in their life span. Which is why we fight so hard to rescue as many families as we can from this fate.

Pandora and her family are of the very many families that lived this life, and one of the few that will get the chance we are going to give them. A chance at a real life, not a life doomed with certain death.

Pandora and each kitten need individual foster homes, ASAP. They are healthy and can be with other cats, the kittens need socialization.

Dewey (now Crosby) Up-Date

Remember that big ball of fluff we called Dewey (now named Crosby), well look at him now! He was rescued in February after his previous owner broke his elbow at 3 months old, for having an accident in the house. He has healed very well from the orthopaedic surgery we did for him, however his elbow is sometimes still a little sore. He is all grown up and very, very happy. Charlotte and her seven dwarves

Charlotte has been nicknamed Mother Theresa, because she is an absolute saint! Not only has she been taking great care of her own kittens, but she happily took on 3 kittens (born two days earlier than Charlotte's own litter) who were rejected by their mother, as she was suffering from mastitis.

As soon as the kittens were in the room and meowed, Charlotte immediately picked them up and they've been part of the family ever since. At first, all the kittens' weights were careful monitored to make sure they were getting enough to eat. They all growing amazingly fast and are starting to be playful. Some are even getting curious about life outside of the box! Seven kittens is a lot for one mother, but Charlotte is doing great, eating a ton and making sure her kittens get more than enough.

Meet Nelly & Babies / Foster Home Needed

We welcomed Nelly and her 3 kittens into the rescue yesterday. Well actually, we spent over an hour trying to catch them outside. Nelly was dumped a few years ago on moving day ago, and has since had multiple litters outside. Yesterday, we finally put and end to the vicious cycle. Saving this one mother from the streets, will save and prevent thousands of kittens from being born.

Charlie had his follow-up evaluation by Dr. Auger last week, it is now 8 weeks post operation. It is hard to believe it has already been 8 weeks since the accident, since we almost had to say goodbye to him uncertain if he would even make the night. Well 8 weeks later, he is doing fantastic and is almost in full use of his leg that 2 doctors and the specialist were not even sure if it would be able to be saved.

They took a third set of follow up x-rays, everything has healed almost perfectly. There is a fragment of bone that is not 100% attached to the main bone, but Dr. Auger says with time it will attach itself. The break through the femur head has healed, along with all the other breaks. However the one concerning factor is that the 14 inch plate needed to keep all he pins and bone together is now rubbing against Charlie's knee joint, and causing irritation which is resulting in damage. We have been told exactly what we feared the worst.. we are going to have to go back into surgery. In a few months from now, once everything has healed even more we are going to have to go back into surgery to remove the plate and pins. The estimation for this surgery is 1000$ if everything goes well. Oh Charlie, our million dollar baby.

On a better note, he is doing great in his new home and slowly adapting to the new family and rules. He is pushing his limits, like he does (which is how he got in the accident in the first place), and seeing how much he can get away with. They have so far only lost a few sandwiches and a banana bread loaf to his counter surfing habits. Because of his cage rest, and pent-up energy he had taken the habit of burning this pent up energy by stalking their cat. Which they have been working with, and he is now responding and leaving the cat alone for the most part. They none the less, love him.

Meet - Allie.. the Squirrel-Cat

Actually, Allie was rescued from a population of squirrels at the beginning of March. She survived the winter nesting with the squirrels, and eating nuts. She is only about 7-8 months old, and until we took her in, she had spent her life outside.. with the squirrels. She is still adjusting to these funny looking sub-scpecied of squirrels she lives with now, called humans. They have beds instead of holes in trees, and food other than nuts. It's a rather new, and funny life-style in her mind.

Her foster mom says; She is weirdly more interested in being around people than many cats I know. When she's not sleeping she's following me like a baby duck, and often I'm on the computer or even lying in bed reading or about to fall asleep, and she sits as close as she can without being touched and just stares at me until I play with her. If I don't get the cat dancer going she'll hop up on the bed and get even closer, or start playing with her toys by herself. She's kind of weird with her clinginess, but in a good way. She will one day allow someone to pet her, but she would have to have been living with them for a few months at least, which isn't really practical for most people.

In other words, she is adorable. But still has some adjusting to these funny looking squirrels she is living with. Won't you be the one that gives her a chance?

Being given up, for the same reasons as every oriental breed.. needs more attention then they are able to give him. Would do good in a home with another cat to play with, and alone a minimal amount of time.

To put things into persecutive on the overpopulation we have in Montreal with our stray cat population, below i have posted a few emails that we have received within the past week alone about kittens outside.

The first email below we have taken priority to help, along with two other litter of kittens not listed. However all of the other emails, we have had to reply starting with 'i am sorry' because we are absolutely powerless to help. With the lack of foster homes, and more important.. funds, we are left unable to help any other way other than giving information.

With a reality like this, when you hear shelters and rescues say 'we are full' or 'we can not save them all' ... we are, and we can not. We are absolutely drowning, with every life we save we know there are hundreds more un-helped. This is where you have to be their saviour, you can make the difference in their life. Take it upon yourself to be the rescuer, be or find the foster home, find the responsible adoptive homes, make sure they have been sterilized. Make the difference in these animals lives, yourself. If we all work together, this could become history.

It is an epidemic of the most preventable form of cruelty. The need to spay and neuter our animals, to prevent contributing to this is vital.

We have a stray cat that we have been feeding in our shed. We were planning on having her neutered when we noticed she was pregnant. Unfortunately she gave birth to kittens which should by now be three weeks old. We have not entered the shed for fear she will move them. We are unable to keep these kittens as we already have cats. We will still have the mother neutered in the trap and release program.

What can we do with the kittens? They will have to be euthenized if they are not socialised. Can you help us? In this town abandoned cats are an epidemic.

We have a stray cat problem here in Dorval. There are 5 kittens which were being fed by several people in the neighbourhood. They are in fact getting to be quite big.

Now we've been told because of one complainer that we can no longer feed these cats.

Dorval has no animal shelter. The city by-law states residents cannot feed stray cats but the by-law also states it is against the law to be cruel to animals. I think it will be cruel to sit and watch these cats starve to death so we are in a catch 22 situation.

The only thing the city seems interested in is to issue fines if we are caught feeding these cats. Although they have recently said they will look after the situation. Now I'm wondering if they plan on putting these cats down which I'm against.

My question to you is there anything you folks could do to help these animals!

We recently found a litter of four kittens in our back yard, guarded by their mother. They've made a home in a half empty bag of peat moss. They seem to be safe for now, but we're not sure what do with them. We'd like to make sure they grow up safe and healthy but adopting them by ourselves isn't really feasibly for us. Is it possible to find a home for them? I think they are around 3 weeks old. For now, while they are still living in the yard, is there anything we could do to help them, such as giving the mother some food? We've given her a dish of water. We haven't dealt with a situation like this before.

I might need some help finding a kitten a home. Last weekend my son found a stray kitten who appears to be around 4 - 5 weeksold, but I can't be sure of his age, as I'm no expert. He seems to be still nursing, as he is a little plump. He is the only kitten t...hat we saw. (My son found him in a old, beat up camper that it behind a garage.) I didn't want to take him when I saw him, because I think he still needs his mother, and I wasn't able to take him home, as I already have a full house, and one more pet would probably drive my hubby over the edge. Je cherche un famille d’accueil temporaire pour une belle petite chatte affectueuse qui, somme toute, a été abandonnée. La maman a eu 4 bébés (3 noirs et 1 tabby) en dessous du cabanon de mon 2e voisin. Les bébés ont environ 4 semaines.

Il y a un HIC...Mes voisins ont 2 chiens dont un Jack russel qui est très gentil mais c'est un vrai chasseur (c’est sa nature de terrier) et il n'aime pas les chats. Les voisins ont sécurisé les lieux mais les chatons grandissent et vont vouloir explorer...

Je fais quelques contacts ici et là...Les refuges sont plein de chats abandonnés. C'est toujours comme ça. Le Berger blanc peut recevoir la mère et les bébés mais on ne se cache pas que c'est l'euthanasie qui les attend. L'idéal serait que la maman et les chatons soient en famille d'accueil le temps de permettre aux chatons d'être socialisés et adoptés. Ça ne sera pas simple d'attraper les bébés mais c'est faisable. La maman se laisse flatter et elle ronronne. Selon le vétérinaire, les bébés ne devraient pas être séparés de leur maman. La maman est aussi facilement adoptable.

J'étais prête à les prendre chez-moi le temps que les chatons soient prêts a être adoptés mais étant donné que j'ai déjà 2 chats dont un que j’ai sauvé alors qu’il été bébé. Mon chat a la rhino (grippe de chat). C’est une maladie respiratoire chronique qui est contagieuse. Si je fais entrer la marmaille, j’expose mon chat et les bébés à de gros problèmes de santé qui pourraient être très graves.

Il faut attraper les bébés et la maman...Pour la maman, ça risque d'être simple mais les bébés...plus compliqué à cause de l'espace restreint.

Je ne sais pas comment les choses vont évoluer car tout ça se passe chez mes voisins. En attendant, je fais des démarches ici et là pour une famille d’accueil...un sous-sol, une chambre d’amis pourraient faire l’affaire...Vous connaissez la suite...si vous connaissez quelqu’un qui connaît quelqu’un...faites-moi signe.

Cola, the last of Ginnys puppies has gone to his forever home and is having a blast. He is finally a part of a big family with a whole lotta love to share. Might we also say, what stunning puppies Ginny had! They are all over 20 pounds and 3 months old, which means they will be up to 60 lbs fully grown. Ginny is hardly 40lbs!! He is looking forward to finding a home that will let him know, he is there to stay. Fear issues aside, he is sweet, affectionate, lovey dovey, loyal and all you could want out of a pup. He would be a great family dog, and actually prefers kids or younger people over adults.

She is a little rocket bottle of love, affection and sweetness (get ready for it!). She is a small little busy bee at only 25 pounds and practically fully grown. She is a genuinely good natured and tempered puppy. She is now looking for a home that will let her know she is there to stay, and of course let her be the puppy she has had to put on hold for 2 months in a cage.

RUFUS & BECKIE Update

Sadly Beckie had to be euthanized because her skin infection took a turn for the worst and mutated into an antibiotic resistant strain. It broke my heart to have to make this decision but it was absolutely the right thing to do. Now poor Rufus is all on his own! HE NEEDS A FAMILY!!! Who will help this little man! He needs a family who can give him lots of attention to get him through his mourning period.

Mission 'Save Speedy' - ACCOMPLISHED

We embarked on a mission, a mission so save one little unlucky pup. Together with the support of the public, the joint efforts of several medical professionals, and dozens of compassionate caring individuals; we are proud to say this mission has been accomplished.

Speedy has been adopted in to an exceptional home, and will become a certified Zootherapy dog. His great nature, love and joy is abundant and contagious. The love and joy he will be able to share and bring to countless peoples lives will be extraordinary. But most importantly, he has become a loved and cherished member of a family he can call his own.

Speedy received the surgery he desperate needed, after his leg was injured and left untreated as a puppy. Unfortunately the leg was unable to be saved, which left the one option of amputation. His leg was amputated thanks to Dr. Monique Plante of The Poirier O’Brien Veterinary Clinic who came in on a day off, the founder and technician. Caroline Ross who also came in on a day off to assist the surgery. Of course this would have never happened if it was not for the staff at the DMV, most importantly Leesa Fauve Guillemette who pleaded to save him.

... 'Tis the season.. we have not even hit moving day or summer yet and everywhere is full to the brim with dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. We have been very overwhelmed and saddened with the amount of emails we have been getting, most of which we are completely unable to help from how full we are right now.

With that these two pups urgently needs fosters:

Maybeline is a young boston cross who has been in a shelter for over 2 months. She is going insane locked up 24/hours a day and the shelter is full to the brim. Literally, they are over their limit and Maybeline has been there far too long for such a good dog. They would like us to get her out as soon as possible, so her sanity can be saved and so they can free up cage space.

Brittany is a 6 months old, spayed, vaccinated, de-wormed lab cross who needs a new foster home ASAP. She is quite, gentle, and very well behaved. Needs to be crated, is fearful of new people and tall men. Issues that are easily worked through. She is house trained and great with other dogs.

Sponsor an Animal – Speedy had his surgery!

Yesterday Dr. Plante of The Poirier O'Brien Veterinary Clinic and an Eleven Eleven Tech / Founder Caroline Ross both went in on their days off to perform the surgery Speedy desperately needed. Speedy needed an amputation after his knee was broken 4 months ago and left untreated by the previous owners. The surgery took over 2 hours, and Speedy was a trooper. Everything went very well, and should heal beautifully. He now no longer has a dangling leg to trip on.

Waking up was hard, as an amputation is a huge surgery and very painful. He was given a morphine injection before he woke up, has a Fentanly transdermal patch on, had a Metacam injection post-op and will be on oral pain killers for the next week or so. Needles to say, we have him on good pain management. He did loose a decent amount of blood during the surgery, as we had to go through a few very large veins and arteries so we kept him hospitalized and on fluids for 24 hours. We are going in to re-rvaluate him tonight and see if he is ready to come home or not.

NEW ARRIVALS: These kittens arrived to us after being rejected by their mother who was sick from a mastitis. They were 4 days old, and had not been fed in over a day. Listless, lifeless, and on deaths door.. but thanks to 'round the clock feeding and a whole lot-a TLC they are now healthy little critters. We were also luck enough that we were able to place them with Charlotte, a mother kitty who we took in very pregnant and gave birth Thursday. Charlotte was very quick to pick up the new babies, and place them with the rest of her litter. Everyone is happy and doing really well, purrrrrs all around.

Date Rescued: April 16th 2010

Reason Rescued: Brittany was abandoned in a house when her owners moved. They left her and another pup, George, without food or water, until the city discovered them. They were then brought into a clinic to be euthanized by the municipality, as they do not have a pound.

Brittany, despite the hard start.. is a fantastic pup. Loving, affectionate, forgiving, smart, and all around awesome. She is fearful, of many new things, people, and dogs. But with a little reassurance she quickly overcomes her fear.

She wants nothing more than to just be right by your side, all of the time. She has great re-call, and picks up new tricks and commands very quickly. In fact we tought her to lie down in 5 minutes. She is crate trained, and house trained.

Charlotte finally has her kittens!

When Charlotte first came to us, we were told she was ready to give birth any day now, and it showed, her baby bump was already huge. Well "any day now" turned into two weeks, and she only got bigger by the day!

Everyday we'd thought we'd seen the signs and were on the lookout for kittens. Well this past Thursday morning, our patience paid off, we woke up to four beautiful, healthy, fluffy kittens. She must have given birth just as we fell asleep, because by the morning they were all cleaned up. The kittens are absolutely adorable (as most are), three tabbys like Charlotte and one black and white kitten. Charlotte's amazing character is really shining through, as she still loves company and sneaking in a cuddle while her kittens nap. She is a great mum, very attentive and always purring, although she wouldn't mind getting some of the attention that her kittens are getting!

Meet Speedy: a 6 months old Italian Greyhound who was facing euthanasia. Why on earth would such a rare, expensive breed, and possibly the cutest puppy ever be facing euthanasia?

Despite coming from a ‘reputable breeder’ (not that that even matters, a breeder is a breeder in our eyes) he broke his knee shortly after being bought, and his new owners thought he would grow out of it. Unfortunately (if only life was that easy), he did not, and then was facing euthanasia at only 6 months old. His knee is now a big ball of cartilage and scar tissue. He has not even used the leg for over 3 months. A specialist has evaluated him, and there is no hope in saving the leg because of how old the injury is. So Speedy now needs an amputation. Not that is will really make a difference, as he has never really used that leg and living up to his greyhound breed he is still faster than any other 4 legged pup out there.

His dead leg however is not his only issue (it can never be that simple). Again, living up to his grey hound breed.. he has horrible teeth. At 6 months old he has had to have a full dental, and extractions of adult teeth that were already rotting. We are not sure if he even has enamel on his teeth, which makes him pre-disposed to building up tartar. He even had a small benign growth in the mouth, which was also removed. Okay so Speedy is a lemon pup, but hey he still deserves a chance at life, which we are more than willing to give him.

Other than those small little issues, he is a fantastic little guy. Playful as any other puppy, happy, affectionate, a great kisser, and already house trained! His adoptive home should expect to be showered with more love than physically capable to handle, he is a little teeny-tiny bundle of joy. However he will need his teeth cleaned daily, twice daily ideally. It is just a matter of making it a part of your routine and he loves the tasty chicken toothpaste, so you won’t hear him complain. He will probably need a few more dental surgeries down the line, and will probably not be left with many teeth at a very young age. His three legs will not affect him or his joints in the long run, as greyhounds have great joints and hips.

In our eyes he is a gem, and we are hoping there are other people out there (who are just as crazy as we are) that can see the same golden pup we see. We will be amputating his leg as soon as the funds are raised, we have already had his dental done.

Meet Ginny: She is a young, affectionate, happy, obedient dog who loves nothing more than to just simply be by your side. She is one of the sweetest dogs Eleven Eleven has ever come across, and has no ounce of angry or resentment in her considering where she came from. Ginny is a survivor in the strongest way possible, not only over coming conditions that would kill most dogs but not even letting it affect her personality and demeanour. Not even holding her negative experience against anyone, or the humans beings that inflicted it on her. The only thing that gives this lovely girls past abusive conditions away, is her missing front leg.

Ginny was rescued in December by Animal Quebec from a hoarder up north who was hoarding over 30 dogs in despicable conditions. She was kept and compassionately cared for by the loving and dedicated volunteers at The SPCA Emergency Shelter until we took her over. Ginny was one of the many, but only one of the very few Huskies, most are golden crosses (also for adoption, through the E-Shelter). They were chained to trees outside with no shelter, warmth food or water and expected to survive. Eleven Eleven took over Ginny January 31st and welcomed her into a loving, warm foster home. She gave birth 4 days later to 6 healthy puppies February 4th, despite the doctors predictions of only 2 puppies.. maybe three. We were very surprised to see this tiny little mother of only 35 pounds produce so many puppies!

Ginny is emaciate, on a body condition scale of 1 to 9 she is easily a 2. Despite being so under weight she also has to nurse 6 puppies, before we can nurse her back to health. On top of having 6 puppies Ginny fought with gastro-intestinal upsets which we worked very hard to control. Medication after medication and expensive diet after expensive diet, we have finally found a combination that agrees with her. Which unfortunately is an extremely expensive food that only comes in 8 pound bags, which she and the puppies goes through at least one a week. Ginny also has two severly broken Canines with full pulp exposure which we are looking into having a root canal or cap done on them to save the teeth, otherwise if not possible we will have to remove them. She will need to be spayed, and before going into surgery will need a full blood panel done. When she is spayed we will look to fix her canines at the same time, and still will need to be on fluids because she will be under for a long period of time. She has had several worm protocols to help facilitate the control of the gastro-upsets along with the puppies. The puppies will all also need to be spayed, de-wormed, vaccinated and placed.

Charlie Update - ADOPTED! / THANK YOU

We are happy to tell you with great excitement, that today we have brought Charlie to his new home 2 hours up north.. Charlie has been finally adopted. I shared my home and heart with this lovely gentlemen for 8 months, and will miss having his big head greeting me or resting on my lap. I will miss his gigantic kisses, and big hugs. I will miss him rolling around in my lap for belly rubs with failing limbs, that sometimes got me in the face by accident. I will miss him sitting in my lap, or trying to, even if he did not really fit. I will miss the look on his face when he knows he did something wrong, or how he was always excited to see me even if i was not at my 'best'... i will miss him. But he has now found his forever home, a family entirely for himself.

The family he has been adopted into is exceptional, and has decades of experience with this breed. He is an only child of the family, and will be down right spoiled dirty-rotten. He has plenty of acres to run fee in (with no cars of course), a lake to spend his summer next to, and most importantly a family to call his own. We are told not to expect him back, he is there to stay.

We have enjoyed our time with him, and concurred many feats towards promoting a good name for pit-bulls with him. Many people may not know that he was actually a favorite at the old age home my grandmother resides in. He broke boundaries, and opened up minds. He welcomed adults or infants, puppies or dogs, with the kindest nature and biggest kisses. He is a mascot for the breed, and has made a huge impact on the way many people viewed pit-bulls before they met him. We hope, and know he will continue to do so for the rest of his life.

He has become one of Eleven Eleven’s mascots, and always will be.

I first met Charlie September 4th, 2009, when he was brought in to be euthanized by his previous owner at just over a year old. I was 2 hours into a 12 hour shift, and had until the end of the day to rescue him or he would meet his fate. He was huge, and weighed as much as I did, but he was such a good dog, that’s all I could describe him as, a good dog. Because he was, and is, and I promised him I would do everything in my power to save him. Which I did, and in-between two 30-minute beaks that day I found a place for him to go that night. At the end of the shift, we took him to his new temporary home. He later had to change fosters, to Joanne. He was so out of control, massive, and had no training that his fosters felt he could never be placed. So I got him a personal trainer, that worked with them one on one through his issues. He then went to classes every week with the foster. Thankfully to the wonderful, dedicated foster home and mommy, Joanne (who is also my mother), we turned this out-of-control teenager into a well-mannered gentlemen. But despite his perfect temperament, and immaculate training, due to breed prejudice, Charlie was overlooked and no one was even interested in adopting him. We had him for 8 months, and were ready to keep him another year if needed until he found his home.

Then in March, I got the phone call. Charlie had gotten away, and had been hit by a car. I did not even hesitate, he was rushed to the emergency clinic within 20 minutes at 1am and was already going into shock. X-Rays revealed a shattered femur. At first glance the vet said to just amputate. But I am stubborn, and I promised Charlie like I promise all of the rescues that I would do everything in my power for him. Which I did, he was seen by a specialist who was not sure if he could save the leg either. I still pushed forward; within 10 hours of the accident Charlie went into reconstructive surgery to piece the leg back together (literally). 4, 000$, five hours, 12 screws and a 14 inch plate later, his leg was back in one piece. It was the hardest surgery the doctor has ever done successfully, and it indeed was successful. He has now regained almost full use of the leg.

Without support and help like yours Eleven Eleven would be helpless, Charlie would be helpless. From the bottom of our hearts, and deeper we sincerely thank you for all of your support. Charlie being saved is a direct result of each and every one of your support, you have helped make a tremendous difference in this very special dogs life.

We have reached close to half of what is needed to recover his surgery funds, and will continue to pay off his debt (for a while). Slowly, but surely. If we had to do it again, we would in a heart beat. He was worth every penny needed to save his life, however many times we have had to save his life.

We also have a special thank you to say to his foster home Joanne who made this perfect dog what he is today, and The Under Dog Club for the wonderful support they have shown us.

He is strong as he has ever been, happy as he has ever been. Puppys first bath

We took advantage of the nice weather to give some stinky pups a much needed bath. It was all their first baths, although they did not see why they needed to be washed and threw a bit of a fight.. they all subsided to the soapy back rubs pretty quickly. We now have three squeaky clean pups who enjoy their days and nice weather in a massive out-door play pen.

Charlotte was dumped outside, like the millions of other cats. Except she was not spayed and is now very, very pregnant. She is a sweet heart, and we have taken her in to see her through the pregnancy and the kittens through adoption. She is due any day now, and will be moved to a comfy foster home tonight for her to settle in and have her babies in peace. Once her babies are old enough, she and the litter will be looking for new homes.

This lovely little lady was found wandering the streets! She was rescued by our exotics rescue lady herself and seen by a vet asap. She is skinny as can be, so was probably roughing it out there for a decent amount of time. Not to mention was covered in fleas, hence her name. She is a little sick, and getting meds. But will be completely healthy in no time. She is a doll, and a survivor. Now all she needs is to find a home who will for once, cherish her.

Rocky - Adopted!

After 3 months of being with his foster home and looking for an adoptive home they have decided he ain't going no-where. Rocky's foster home has decided to adopt him. Rocky was rescued from being euthanized in December at just under 2 years old because his previous family could no longer handle the no longer little and cute, now fully grown puppy they bought at the pet store.

Pumpkin - Adopted!

Pumpkin (now Mottly) was adopted by her foster home. Pumpkin was brought into a vet clinic to be euthanized after her previous owner passed away and the rest of the family wanted nothing to do with her. We took a quick look at her mouth and realized she needed a teeth cleaning. Little did we know her mouth was so bad it was rotting, literally. She had a marathon dental from hell, the vet was in there for hours removing teeth left right and centre, fighting back bursting abscess built up behind teeth. She is a good example of what happens if you do not keep and eye on your pets dental care. Thankfully we had the dental done, if her teeth were left in that state any longer hre vital organs would have shut down from bacteria overload entering the blood stream. None the less, she recovered amazingly and after one week with her in foster she wanted to hear nothing about her being adopted to anyone else. The foster home adopted her and they are both happy as can be.

Kelly Green our special needs a not-so-lucky kitty brought in to be euthanized at a veterinary clinic on St. Patricks day was adopted. If she was not un-lucky enough this kitty is deaf and blind.. and was a street cat! Her luck has now changes and she is in a stable home to stay with a new kitty friend to guide her around.

She is now very content in the new home and already being showered with love and grooming sessions from her new sister.

Porscha - Not feeling to well!

Porscha our Minature Pinscher who has been for adoption since December developed an intestinal infection last week and had to be hospitalized. She started with diarrhea for 4 days, 7 to 10 times a day of dark brown to black (indicating upper intestine bleeding). She was fasted for 24 hours, then started on rice and water, finally Medical gasto for 2 days. But nothing helped.

Day 4 she was then hospitalized at the emergency clinic (DMV):

X-Rays and an ultrasound were preformed and revealed her system was full of air and liquid poop.
She was check out by the vet and was running a bit of a temperature at 39.5 C
She was also very dehydrated so hospitalized for 24 hours on fluids (electrolytes + Calcium Phosphate)

She is now on an intestinal antibiotic, Metronidazole. But feeling much better! She will stay on the Medical gastro diet for a few more weeks and then should be good to be switched back to her normal diet.

***She is now recovered and doing just fine!

Oftentimes people make false comparisons due to familiarity with rampant speciesism present in society. Usually, people are so shocked that they begin exclaiming that the differing perspective is extreme without question. It's understandable considering the obscene amount indoctrination we faced as children and are still facing. Unfortunately we have been successfully indoctrinated that we scoff at the idea that our actions and mentality are speciesist. What is speciesism? Simply put, it is the discrimination against nonhuman animals. Our nonhuman animal consumption via food and clothing is one of millions of symptoms of speciesism. Our precise selection of one species over another is speciesist. Our enjoyment of saving one type of species because of their intelligence and/or beauty is speciesist. The list goes on and on. Today's blog is focused on nonhuman animal slavery (which, of course, is speciesism). I mention veganism because it is the antidote to speciesism. It is the compassion for all species--human or nonhuman. It is the principle of nonviolence and the rejection of all nonhuman animal commodification. In this blog, I mention the subtleties of nonhuman exploitation that are often overlooked. When we think of "pain and suffering" of nonhuman animals, we generally associate these with the physical abuse of them. However, one need not pet and coo over a cow moments prior to her death (murder) to exempt it from the exploitation category.

Here are some examples of these nuances:

It's like a religion.
I had to start the blog off with this first because people usually view nonhuman animal slavery as something that is necessary and harmless (neither are true). Usually, people treat the commodification of nonhuman animals as if it were a convenience in their lives. In a way it is, but oftentimes we forget that we are the oppressor who comes away from the situation untouched.

Going back to the topic, a religion or system of beliefs is personal. They shall not be imposed upon others. There is no concrete evidence that there is one deity, higher power or lack of. We shall never really know the truth whenever or if ever that time will come. Veganism, on the other hand, cannot even be likened to a religion because it is part of a very real social justice issue. An issue backed with facts, statistics and studies. To excuse such violations against facts is simply willful ignorance. When it is done through the use of religion, spirituality or atheism is also willful ignorance. It is a desperate attempt to validate something that is unjustified but that you want to continue doing. Simply put, it does not matter whether you see or not because it is still happening and it can always be accompanied by countless documented evidence. A system of beliefs does not have that.

It's art. It's entertainment.
It can be tricky when trying to define art. However, animals never consent to being used. We human animals, are their oppressors, assume that consent for our own ends. We also do not compensate them for their "work." Humans, on the other hand, can consent and are usually compensated for their time, energy and effort. For instance, I'll take myself as an example because I have recently taken part in a film that would be probably come off as controversial to some. If my character in a film is to be raped, I acknowledge that this is a work of fiction (or based on a true story) but I also consented to that. In addition, I am being compensated for this work because it is a story that is being told and nothing else. Although it may be offensive, it does not necessarily mean that it is condoned by the director and by the cast. Say, if I were to do Hustler Magazine (god forbid!), this is no longer representing a character. It is representing myself. I have consented to it and I was compensated. However, the lines of art are now blurred and have the potential to invite harm for myself and others.

Now let's go back to the nonhuman animals. Nonhuman animals are placed in movies, commercials, tv shows and just about anything involving entertainment (circuses, rodeos, bullfighting, swimming with the dolphins, zoos, etc etc). They may be given the basics but are not given the freedom to live their lives the way they want. It does not matter what their treatment was like or whether they were killed or not. What matters is that they were forced against their will to take part in something that they did not consent to, which is slavery. Slavery is still cruelty whether you "compensate" them with food, water and housing or not. When we take "artistic" depictions of speciesism (i.e. meat dresses, a video of a cat being skinned alive, romanticized images of horse drawn carriages, etc), it is not art. It is the equivalent to a snuff film--a porn film that ends with the murder of the actress(es). In fact, even worse. Actresses initially consented not knowing that their death was awaiting them. No nonhuman animal ever did say yes and depictions like these inevitably ended their lives. If not, at the very least, forced them to partake in slavery. Another form of "art" involving animals is by taking their remains and constructing something (i.e. high heeled hoof shoes, feather headbands, bearskin rugs, etc). This is fetishizing the oppression and cruelty towards them, thus causing the demand for their bodies much like my invitation for misogyny if I were to do Hustler Magazine. The difference is that I am a human being who can still consent to something but can put myself and possibly others in danger by perpetuating the objectification of women. I had a choice although it was a poor one. Nonhuman animals never have a say whether it was fiction or nonfiction.

Please do not take my words out of context.

The unnecessary dependancy on "working" animals--for the police, the blind, etc
This is not my being disrespectful towards individuals who suffer from certain circumstances. This is not my being insensitive. I do understand that the following is provocative but please read this part in its entirety.

First of all, if we take the dogs who are utilized for the blind, it is problematic from the start. For one, these dogs are specifically bred which means that this contributes to the overpopulation (more on that later). This automatically reinforces speciesism. Dogs like any other nonhumans and humans are sentient beings who have different personalities depending on where they grew up and who raised them.

Any "working" animal is an animal who is forced to do something against their will. How many humans hate their jobs? My point exactly. So what makes it any different? Most--not all--humans had the choice to partake in a job they hate. Nonhuman animals don't. If they were asked and had the ability to communicate in english, they would all say that they would want to be doing other things like chewing a bone or sleeping. Humans also saying "oh, they love it" is an assumption that acknowledges what's in our best interest not theirs. Food, water and housing is not adequate compensation and will never be as long as we dictate their lives. They are capable of boredom and probably do not want to be sniffing for drugs or weapons or accompanying a blind individual 24/7. Why not hire human beings to do the job? You want people to be employed? Well, there's a market waiting to flourish. If you want to know if someone is in possession of drugs or weapons, doctors (who can spot the physicalities) and psychologists can be hired for this. In addition, the technology we have is extremely sophisticated (don't forget, we are in 2010!), why not make good use of it instead of relying on free labour?

Body modifications: what's cruel, what's not
Tail docking, ear clipping and declawing are all cruel and done for aesthetic reasons. This in itself is a poor, poor reason to go ahead with the operations.

Spaying and neutering are NOT cruel. Given the circumstances of animal overpopulation and how humans have deemed themselves superior enough to have a say on who stays and who goes (in other words, routinely murdering thousands of healthy, adoptable animals on a daily basis), spaying and neutering are necessary to avoid this from happening. Spaying is equivalent to a hysterectomy and neutering is the equivalent to a vasectomy. Yes, it sucks that we're putting a halt on their reproductive lives but given their circumstances, it would be best. Until humans relinquish their urges to play god, we will be spaying and neutering them so that they do not multiply and add to the thousands of other animals who die because shelters need space (yet another poor reason). I don't know if they can survive in the wild but stray and/or outdoor dogs and cats are the subject of slavery also. Sometimes they are sold into dog fighting, laboratories and other exploitative institutions and practices. This is yet another reason why not adding to the overpopulation is a good idea.

Breeders are all the same whether they are reputable, puppy mill, or backyard
Reputable breeders and their supporters have a tendency to condemn puppy mills and backyard breeders but completely wash their hands of the problems they are causing. The grand one being overpopulation. There are enough animals in a shelter waiting to be adopted and one purchase from a breeder (reputable, backyard or puppy mill) subjects a shelter animal to death. They are all the same and they have created a business off of enslaving and mercilessly impregnating a nonhuman animal for monetary gain--or hobby. Let's put things into perspective. Would you have a 13 year old kid who you decided to make a business out of by making her fall pregnant so that you can make money off selling her babies? That's extremely unethical and not to mention, absurd.

Having them be a part of your family is not slavery...or maybe
What we do to cows, pigs, chickens and other animals who are not normally a part of our family, are slaves and are demanded that they be slaves. Unless you are breeding your dog or cat, you are not enslaving them. Unless you are putting them to work and dictating how their lives should be spent benefitting someone else, you are not enslaving them. Unless you submit them to a form of entertainment (from a movie to the circus), you are not enslaving them. Unless you are not caring for them properly (i.e. hoarding them or tying them to a fence for their entire lives), you are not enslaving them. If you have decided to adopt them and to care for them like most of us do with our fellow dogs and cats, where is the slavery aspect?

Dogs and cats are slightly different. Sure, they're confined to a decent sized space. Often, people will say that having a dog or cat family member is enslavement but what about fish, rabbits, birds, snakes, lizards, etc? Fish are from large bodies of water. No matter what size aquarium or garden pond you have, it will never be enough for fish. Rabbits also have no need to be confined to a cage for the duration of their lives when they have an entire forest to hop around in. Birds are meant to fly but they are imprisoned in cages and denied their very right to fly. Even if you keep their cage door open? Your house will never be vast enough for a bird. Snakes, lizards and other exotic animals deserve to be where they came from. They have no business hanging out in a restricted area nor should they be confined to a foreign place that their bodies may not adapt to. I'm not trying to be speciesist but dogs and cats adapt the best to a home environment in comparison to other domestic animals so there can be no slavery if you are not expecting anything in return from dogs and cats and are treating them with genuine respect. However, because Eleven Eleven is open to other nonhuman animals who may not be generally accepted in other rescues, it is best that we care for them until a better alternative arrives (for instance, if one were to have tropical fish from a certain region and then miraculously somehow visit that region and release the fish there). Sometimes there is no better alternative than caring for them (with the proper equipment and space) until they are ready to leave our lives.

How big is your heart? Meet the not-so-lucky St. Patty's day kitty

Lets just say Kelly did not win the genetics lottery, and should probably never gamble.

Kelly Green is named after St. Patrick’s day. The day she was brought into a clinic and asked to be euthanized. Kelly Green did not have the infamous luck of the Irish on St. Patrick’s day, or in general. She did not win in the genetics loto that is for sure. This little doll, is blind as a bat. If that is not bad luck enough, she is deaf as can be. She was a stray, that some how survived and managed her way around outdoors with no eye sight or hearing. I guess she is lucky in that sense, and lucky that she hit Eleven Eleven right in our soft spots. She is so well adapted to her disability the family that took her in from the streets and eventually brought her to be euthanized because the other cat in the house did not like her had no idea. Even the veterinary clinic took a couple days and gathered the team of vets to confirm that she is deaf, and blind. She gets around just fine, maybe a little slower than most but her disabilities do not affect her. She is sweet as a pea, soft as can be, and full of life and spunk. Estimated to be around 9 months old, and otherwise very healthy. The only thing her disabilities will affect is her adoptability, with so many perfectly ‘normal’ cats and kittens for adoption how is she to compete with them? How big is your heart, big enough to fit this sweet heart in? Open up your mind and heart to her, she will open up yours big and wide. We dare you to take a leap, and give this jem a chance at life. To us she her disabilities and courage are what make her endearing, she is one in a million (literally), consider her a rare diamond.

*** There is no adoption fee, because we are just flat out lucky if we can find anyone with a big enough heart to adopt her.

FLEA BAG needs love!

We now have in our care a young ferret. She was found on the street, we think she's been there for a while as she was flea ridden, dehydrated and is so skinny... just skin and bones. Hopefully she'll be in better shape soon so we can find her a new home! We will keep you posted.

Bunnies need help!

We have received an email in regards to 4 rabbits they have been living in an emergency shelter... for 18 MONTHS! They are being fed livestock grain, bread and fruit... a horrible bunny diet. There are a male, female and a bonded pair of girls. One possibly has an eye infection but otherwise appear healthy (to be confirmed by vet evaluation). Momma Cat Update

This past week has been pretty rough on our newest arrival. Momma Cat, now known as Penny, suffered the loss of all four of her babies this weekend. The veterinarians and technicians were shocked to find that the litter had passed away over the course of Saturday night. Besides Penny's dehydration, both her and her kittens were eating normally.

The doctors at the Animal Health Clinic decided to go ahead with blood work to see if there was an underlying problem that a regular physical exam wouldn't have covered. After running bloods, it showed up that little Penny has an anemic blood disease called haemobartonella, which was probably picked up even before her arrival at the pound 2 weeks ago. Haemobartonella is a parisitic disease transferred through flea bites or open wounds and was definitely the cause of the death of the little kittens. Unfortunately, even if we had discovered the blood disease earlier, Penny's litter still would not have survived. The mother cat automatically passes this disease onto her litter, so the chance of her babies making it through when they were so fragile was slim.

Luckily, haemobartonella is not a long term disease. Thankfully our little girl will make it through, despite her ordeal. Penny was started on antibiotics immediately and will be placed in her foster home this weekend. In the meantime, we are giving her loads of TLC and hope for a forever home that will love her as much as we do.

Bouddha Finally Finds a Forever Home

Bouddha, our 16-year-old diabetic lover boy, has finally found a home. After nearly a year living under the Animal Health Clinic roof, Bouddha was adopted last Saturday afternoon. Bouddha came to us last year in a ketoacidotic state, 15 years old, and about to be put down. After going so long with his diabetes untreated, it didn't seem possible that his blood glucose levels would ever stabilize, but the merciful technicians at the Animal Health Clinic took him in, determined to find him a new home and a second life.

That second chance has finally come for Bouddha, starting over at 16 years old in a multi-kitty house. Living with another, older diabetic cat, Bouddha realy feels right at home. Although the ladies at the clinic will miss his vocal, charismatic personality, everyone is so grateful that he is finally peaceful and happy.

YAGO, Blue Fronted Amazon, has been adopted!

YAGO adopted!!! Yago's previous owner's were no longer able to provide Yago with the time and space he required. They came to us in hopes that we could help find a new forever home for him. Once again we came through!

This past weekend Yago was introduced to his new forever home. I've already received an update that his transition is going very smoothly. He's even been breaking bread with his new family. Things sound like they are going even better then we could have expected! Good luck Yago and family!

Billy - Adopted!

Billy was adopted within a few days of coming into the rescue! He is now in a fantastic home and enjoying life as an only child with all the attention. Good luck billy!

Charlie Update - Picked up from the hospital tonight

We went by to pick Charlie up tonight after his bag of iv pain killers was finished. He is now on Meatcam and Tremadol to help with the pain. Even with the epidural he got yesterday, being on iv pain killers since Thursday night, Metacam and the Tremadol.. he is still in an immense amount of pain. He hardly wants to stand or move, but even sitting or lying is also hard for him. He just can not seem to find the right position to sleep.

The car ride was an adventure in itself. Every bump, pot hole, turn, start or stop all was painful for him. He panted and trembled the whole time, and licked ny hand as if he was asking me how i can make it go away. We all know what the roads in Montreal are like. I cringed the entire ride home for him, it was torture.

He is finally safe and sound in his big new crate that he will have to call home for the next two months of strict bed rest. But i think he is happy to be out of the clinic. He was originally abandoned in a veterinary clinic when he was brought in to be euthanized by his previous owner, because he no longer had time for him. Because of that clinics are always stressful for him, he had no idea we have not abandoned him and will be coming back. Every time we go to one he anticipates being abandoned again. Little does he know, or maybe he should by now, over our dead bodies will that ever happen to him again.

Now it is plenty of meds, rest, tlc and then physiotherapy starting in 8 weeks that will last for months. But at least the hardest part for him is over, he survived a huge surgery and even got out of if with his leg still in place.

Now the hardest part for us is about to start, raising funds to pay off this surgery. We are in the hole right now, a very big and deep hole. With that it also means until Charlie's surgery is paid off.. with our deepest sympathy, we will no longer be able to accept anymore animals in need into the rescue. Our doors will be bolted shut, it would be irresponsible for us to take on anymore as we at this moment in time would have no means of paying for their medical care.

We will be hosting a fundraiser - pet beauty day at Naturalanimal in Westmount on March 28th (Sunday). Nail cut's and ear cleanings, full details to be announced soon. We hope to see you all there!
