Charlie Update - Leg was saved and in one piece (sort of).. after a 4 hour surgery!

4000$, 12 screws, 1 fourteen inch plate, a bunch of wires, 4 veterinary technicians, 2 surgeons, and over 4 hours later.. Charlie's leg was able to be saved.

... out moto is, we will see our rescues through thick and thin, through everything that may come their way. Once we take them into the rescue, they are our responsibility and we will fight teeth an nails for them until the very end. Well.. Charlie certainly took us for the whole 8 yards on this one..

Charlie went into surgery today at around 2pm.. and got out of surgery at 6:30pm. The extent of the injuries was one of the worst the specialist has ever seen, and the worst he has operated on successfully. Charlie was under anesthesia for over 4 hours. The surgery was long, and gruelling, Dr. Auger is the number one orthopaedic specialist in Montréal. If he could not do it, no one could. At times he felt like it was mission impossible and complempated just amputating, but had already gone so far and done so much work, so he pushed forward. It was a puzzle in there, with missing pieces and the pieces that were there just did not seem to fit. He has eleven screws, many wires and one 14 inch plate holding everything together. At least he is bullet proof now (or i hope so), i don't even want to think about trying to get him through airport security. Apparently he will be sensitive to cold in that leg now, go figure? At least the mission impossible was accomplished, and Charlie's leg is there to stay. Amputating it would have been about 300-600$ for us, but we just did not find it ethical to remove a leg that had the potential to be repaired and functioning again (call us crazy).

We were there from 5:30 pm to 8:30, amd went to go see him in the Intensice Care Unit at around 8:00pm before we left. He was totally out of it, completely un responsive. A combination of the anethsia he had been under, his epidural and iv drip fentanly/Metetomadine. Lets just say Charlie is seeing stars right now, and no longer in pain. He was in so much pain last night he was going into shock when he arrived.

His pre-op blood came back pretty normal, so we are not worried about any other damage. Just elevated liver enzymes which is normal with the fact that he was going into shock and muscle damage.

However the hardest part is not over yet he now has 8 weeks cage rest, many check ups, and not to mention physiotherapy. Expected recovery time is at least 3 months. Charlie has already been for adoption with us for seven months.

It is estimated he was hit at about 70 to 120km and hour, also tire marks that curve off the high way over a skunk (Charlie was probably investigating - which is second by his sunk reek) indicate that he was probably targeted by some sick, sick people. The fact that he was hit in the rear and not head on also seconds that. Oh and the tire marks on his back indicate he was fully run over, and is lucky to even be alive.

On another note i can not tell you how many times we were told today "He is such a good dog!!" by the surgeon himself Dr. Auger and every tech that had the pleasure of meeting with him. Even while in x-rays and in such pain he was going into shock.. he still did not even come close to trying to snap at anyone, all licks and tail wags. I can not say for myself i would be that patient if i was in that amount of pain.

Alas once again here we are.. any donation is sincerely appreciated and no donation is too small. We honestly are so grateful for each of your support, we can not even stress that enough.

Thank you good samaritan! - Rocco's bill is now fully PAID

We would like to thank the good samaritan (who wished to remain anonymous - we do not even know who it was!) who called into the DMV Foundation today and paid off the rest of the bill for Rocco's surgery. What a lovely surprise!!! We can not thank this anonymous heaven sent angle enough, seriously. Very.. very much appreciated. Who would have thought a random act of kindness like this actually happens so close to home.

For a little up-date on Rocco.. he is doing fantastic!! Loving his wheelchair donated by Walkin' Wheels (thank you!) and of course his brand new functioning leg.

Dewey wrap-up (Case closed!)

Dewey is a regular little pup; full of love, joy, happiness, gets into trouble and still has accidents in the house. He is your typical 3 months old puppy. However unfortunately for Dewey his elbow was broken while being punished for something that, well every puppy does. Dewey had an accident in the house. He then faced three options, being euthanized at such a young age, leave it un-treated and have a life long issue with the joint or have the corrective specialized orthopeadic surgery done.

Dewey is a fantastic puppy, with a whole life ahead of him; an accident in the house should not have to mean the end of his short life (or a broken elbow).

We were able to raised 1,040$ online and 300$ at our Nail Cutting / Dewey Meet 'N Greet Fundraiser of 2000$ for Dewey's surgery and had the surgery done within 48 hours of him being surrendered. He was operated on February 12th 2010 by Dr. Auger at The Riv-Sud Veterinary Hospital. The surgery went GREAT and was a huge success. Dewey now has a 100% chance of recovery with no life long issues.

Dewey was adopted February 3rd 2010 to a lovely family who followed his story from the start. They have taken on the task of his physiotherapy and countless post-op veterinary check ups. But he is now guaranteed a long, loving life in his new home with plenty of love and space to run (once physiotherapy is over of course). We can not wait to see him finally be able to just be a bouncy playful puppy again, after having to put that (or at least us trying to) on hold for a few months while he healed.

Rocco wrap up (Case closed!)

After recently turning his life around, Justin now needs help saving the life of his 6-year-old dog who has seen Justin through all of his hardships. Justin Durrell is a familiar sight to NDG residents. Rain or shine (or 30 below), this young man can usually be found panhandling outside the corner of Sherbrooke and Hingston.

Justin is friendly with many locals, who give him change, or bring him hot coffee on cold days. They are also familiar with Justin's two beloved dogs, Rocco and Molar, who are always by his side. But lately residents have noticed that one of his dogs, Rocco, has been absent. Rocco recently suffered a leg injury, and Justin is desperately trying to raise money for an operation. He was playing ball and took a bad fall. He tore his ACL ligament and hurt two others - needs expensive specialized surgery to recuperate. Operation and recovery will cost 3, 700$. Justin ended up on the streets after a hard start to life and a series of foster homes. Justin has recently gotten off the streets and is in his own apartment, but doesn't have the money for Rocco's operation.

Justin’s plan was to try and raise 50$ a day panhandling for about 60 days to be able to afford the surgery. Even at –30 despite concerned citizen’s warnings Justin was on the streets desperately trying to come up with the money. Christmas day and all of New Years Eve, Justin still continued to relentlessly try and raise money for Rocco. However with the collective help of the community and good Samaritans we hope to be able to help Justin and Rocco and see them through the surgery and recovery.

As the word of Justin and Rocco buzz around NDG, Montreal and across North America (Thanks to the C4P Newsletter) this rescue story has quickly brought an entire community together in the efforts to save Rocco. From local vet clinics and businesses advertising Rocco’s story to neighbors coming together and donating an entire community is working together. From as far as Walkin’ Wheels in the states donating a much needed doggy wheel chair for Rocco to The DMV foundation covering 1000$ of the surgery and helping us raise money. Even Diane Bond from House of Shoes is organizing a ‘Shop for a Cause’ day for Rocco January 31^st. The community is in motion, and Justin’s dream of seeing Rocco back on his feet is coming closer and closer.

Dewey Up-Date

Dewey had his surgery done yesterday and everything went GREAT! He is now back in one piece, literally and we will be picking him up this afternoon.

We rescued a baby bernese x golden pup tonight who's knee was broken while being scolded for having an accident. The break was in the growth plate, and will need to be seen and operated on by a specialist. The surgery alone will be at least 2000$.. and needs to be done with in the next few days. Pictures and sponsorship program will be up asap. We are going to need every ones help to save list little pup!

Good News - Rocco had his surgery!

Rocco had his operation on January 19th, and is now recovering, and resting comfortably at the DMV.

During the surgery, the Dr. Planté of the DMV discovered that the damage to Rocco's leg was even worse than we thought - thank you to the DMV for moving his surgery up! Especially, thanks to the DMV for their generous donation of $1000 towards the surgery.

A big thank you to everyone who has helped Rocco so far - to all his donors, including Walkin' Wheels, who donated the specialized wheelchair for Rocco's recovery.

Thanks to everyone out there who fell in love with this brave, beautiful dog, we have raised an incredible amount of money in a short time. But we can't stop now! We are getting much closer to our total goal, but there is still money left to be raised. We owe the DMV money for Rocco's operation, and Rocco will need medication during his recovery.

Once Rocco is better, his owner Justin, will be heading back to school, and able to make a new start in life.

We are very happy to announce that Walkin' Wheels is donating a wheelchair for Rocco!!! - This is heaven sent! They are usually 500$, and without it Rocco faced the risk of tearing his 'good' knee from all the extra weight and stress it has taken on. With an already 3000$ surgery (Now 2000$ thanks to the DMV Foundation) , the 500$ was proving hard to fit into the expenses.

Aside from the surgery costs of 3, 000 Rocco is a big dog and needs pain meds for his condition. Expensive pains meds.. and even more when he is so big. He has successfully gone through a 100ml bottle of Metacam in record time (at the recommended dosage). We had to pick up a 180ml bottle today for a pocket breaking 180$... YIKES. When we say every penny counts.. it really does!

Noah Updates

Update 28th December 2009: Noahs feeding tube has been removed and he is now eating all by himself!

Update 20th December 2009: Noahs jaw fixture was finally removed! He is now starting to eat small bits of food and will be able to have his feeding tube removed soon.

Update 6th November 2009: Noah has recovered from the surgery and is now walking around, playing, exploring. However another complication has come up and it has been discovered that he has zero tear production. This could be cause by head trauma and a result of nerve damage, it may or may not be permanent. For now he needs eye lubrication at least 3 times a day. The eye ointment is expensive, and adding up when he needs it so often.

Update 2nd November 2009: Noah is now slowly starting to walk. He has been unable to until this point, it is still not sure if this is due to the head injuries or not. He continues to be fed through the feeding tube, and will not be able to eat on his own until the fixture is removed. The re-evaluation is in one month, at that point they will determine if they will have to go back into surgery or not. However they believe they will most likely have to. Therefore Noah will need constant feedings throughout the day for at least one month, if not two. For now his incision is healing well and everything is going smoothly.

Update 30th October 2009:Noah went into his first surgery with Doctor Warrak, and Interns Dr. Grenier and Dre. Bond. As explain by Dr. Warrak, “A cerclage was put to immobilize the fracture at the intermandibular symphysis. An external fixator was put to reduce the mid-mandibular fracture. It was impossible to put a cerclage because there were some mandibular fragments, and all the plates were too big for the mandible. There was a lot of fibrous tissues, indicating that the fracture was old, at least two weeks. Due to his very small size at 5 pounds, it was tricky. They had to adjust their instruments, pins and wires accordingly. The surgeons were amazed by the extent of the injuries, which means a lot when these are specialist and see this every day. The surgery nonetheless went well and Noah recovered in the ICU that night.

Update 29th October 2009: The CT scan revealed extensive jaw injuries, more than expected; Oblique mid-mandibular fracture to the right, with a fracture at inter-mandibular symphysis. Polytrauma to the head, with multiple fractures at the temporo-mandibular articulation, skull, zygomatic arch, frontal sinus, ethmoid, and nasal septum. The surgeon Dr. Warrak, explained that it was caused by “severe head trauma” comparable to being hit by a car. However Noah was stickly kept indoors in an appartment with no acess to escape. Noah will need at least two surgeries each costing 1200$. This does not include the pre-operative and post-operative intensive care needed.

Update 28th October 2009: Noah has been transferred to St. Hyacinthe to have a CT scan and be evaluated by the surgeon.

Update 27^th October 2009: A feeding tube was put into place. This tube is directly attached to his stomach as he cannot use his mouth due to the damage. Despite difficulty incubating because of the injuries and swelling the surgery went very well as he has now recovered from it.

Noah a young, healthy, affectionate little kitten was brought into a veterinary clinic October 26^th 2009 because he had not been eating. Upon examination it became apparent that there was a good reason for Noah’s lack of appetite, his lower jaw had been severely broken.Unable to afford the 3000$+ it would cost to afford the reparative surgery; the previous owners declined further treatment leaving one option (and a much cheaper one), euthanasia. After previously being treated for a broken rib and fractured paw at only 3 months old, now 5 months old with a broken jaw.. Noah was facing the end of his short life. Thankfully that day a small girl with a big heart came to his rescue. On that faithful day Noah found his guardian angel.

Update December 1st 2009: Frankie has fully recovered from the surgery and we will not need to go back in again, yay! His life of pain is now DONE. He has been adopted by his foster mother and will now enjoy his new pain-free life happily with her in Hudson.

Update October 28th 2009: Frankie has managed to rip out his stitches! He was brought back in and had to be sedated to have his stiches put back. His ulcer however has fully healed with very minimal scar tissue after over a month of intensive treatments.

Update October 25th 2009: Frankie went back into surgery for his left eye, still needed a little more nip and tuck! The surgery went smoothly and he has recovered very well.

Update October 15th 2009: Frankie has developed a minor infection in his left eyelid incisions! He mastered the art of rubbing his eyes with the E-Collar (Which is to prevent that). In turn he gave himself and infection, silly boy. He is now on anti-biotics for the infection and eye drops to reduce the scar tissue from the massive ulcer he had in his eye. His right eye looks GREAT, on the bright side. We may have to go back into surgery with the left eye once it is healed, we may have not taken the eye lid back enough. It is better to take too little than too much out! Soon enough we will have him all fixed up. Also the other big news is; Frankie has been adopted by his foster mom!!! He won over her heart and after weeks of giving him his intensive treatments.. who wouldn't! We are very happy for him, he will now enjoy the rest of his life in Hudson.
