WE ANIMALS: McGill Symposium & Exhibit on Animal Law

**Up-Coming event invitation!**

From March 8th to 11th 2010, the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund at McGill will be hosting a symposium and photography exhibit on animal law. It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the following events scheduled to take place at the McGill Faculty of Law:

Photography Exhibit (March 8th-11th)
The exhibit will feature the work of prominent Canadian photographer Jo-Anne McArthur, whose unique talent brings awareness to animal issues in powerful ways. The photographs will be drawn from her current project, We Animals (www.weanimals.org), which captures human interactions with animals in a way that allows the viewer to find new meaning in unnoticed situations of use, abuse and sharing of spaces.

Switzerland Leading the Way: A Presentation by the World's Only Public Animal Welfare Lawyer, Dr. Antoine F. Goetschel (March 9th at 5:30 pm)
Dr. Antoine F. Goetschel will speak on advancements in animal welfare legislation in Switzerland as well as his role as the world's first and only public animal welfare lawyer in Zurich, Switzerland. In court, Dr. Goetschel acts much like a public prosecutor, safeguarding the interests of animal victims in criminal cases. It is his job to enforce the Swiss Federal Animal Protection Act, enacted in 2008, which is generally regarded as one of the most progressive pieces of animal protection legislation in the world. In addition, Dr. Goetschel will speak on the current Swiss popular initiative that proposes to compel all 26 cantons of Switzerland to appoint a public animal welfare lawyer.

Perspectives on Animal Law: A Panel of Experts from Switzerland, Canada and the U.S. (March 10th at 6:00 pm)
Experts from three different countries will engage in a panel discussion exploring the current state of animal welfare law in Canada and abroad, as well as perspectives for future development. Speakers include David Wolfson, professor of animal law at Columbia Law School, Dr. Antoine Goetschel, the world's first and only public animal welfare lawyer, and Alanna Devine, current Director of Animal Welfare at the Montreal SPCA.

Vernissage & Reception (March 10th at 7:45 pm)
Join us in the Atrium of the Faculty of Law after the panel discussion for an exclusive evening with photographer Jo-Anne McArthur. Several of her pieces will be up for sale, healthful and ethical food & drinks will be provided, and raffle tickets will be sold for a chance to win gift certificates to Montreal vegetarian restaurants and a free photo/portrait shoot with McArthur in Toronto. Proceeds raised this evening will go to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, the Montreal SPCA, and Fauna Foundation.

We hope to see you there!

Sunday, February 21st - Meet 'N Greet with Dewey / Nail Cutting Fundraiser

Date: Sunday February 21st 2010
Time: 11 - 16h
Place: Natural Animal (4932B Rue Sherbrooke Ouest)

MEET DEWEY: Dewey is a regular little pup; full of love, joy, happiness, gets into trouble and still has accidents in the house. He is your typical 3 months old puppy. However unfortunately for Dewey his elbow was broken while being punished for something that, well every puppy does. Dewey had an accident in the house. He then faced two options, being euthanized at such a young age or having the corrective specialized orthopeadic surgery done.

Eleven Eleven had his surgery done at Hopital Veterinaire Rive-Sud Friday Feburary 12th.

This is a chance for everyone who has donated or would like to personally. Come and meet the little Mr. Man – Dewey! He is very excited to meet all the faces that helped save his life.

After everything he has been through. Feel welcome to sign his cast with some words of encouragement. If you are going to have to lug around a goofy cast, might as well have some fun with it?

We still have a fair way to go to cover his surgery costs so we are also having a nail cutting fundraiser. With donations of 5$ or more your pet gets a free nail cut! Rabbits, cats, dogs, all welcome!

(People who have already donated online we will have a list so bring your furry critter by, we will cut their nails for free!)

*We will also have items and T-Shirts from our newly launched store for sale at the event - skip the mailing fee and get them at the discounted price!
