Jill (Now Lucky) Update - Progression of a Puppy-Mill rescue

Hi Caroline,

I am trying to send updates as much as possible but I am busy at work and when at home in complete awe over my new Lucky girl!

She got her booster shots not this past Thursday but the one before on February 25th. The vet wanted to wait one more week before removing the sutures. The Doctor thinks she is just a Gem... She said I have a great new addition! When I tried to pay and had Lucky in my arms it was a little difficult, so the girl at the cash asked if she could give me a hand and reached for Lucky who sat on her lap with her two front paws on the desk. She kept saying "look I have a new assistant". Really cute...

Wednesday March 4th, we had the sutures removed and it was a breeze.

You would not recognize little Lucky now... She has most of her energy in the morning.... She slept with me last night because she is waking me up at crazy hours!@# 4:30 a.m. and the next night 2:30 a.m.!@# So last night, she slept with me because I NEED some sleep oh... Boy! She steels all my socks and we even had a tug of war this morning. I put her on the floor so I could make my bed and found out that she is quite capable of jumping up on my bed!!! Then she wouldn't let me make it... All the time jumping around and running around like she succeeded something super special which she has actually...

This is all true but only when it is her and I... When I have visitors she regresses and I am sure tonight going up North, we will be back at square one... Sometimes, I get discouraged only because I know that she has that puppy in her and a stubborn streak too! But she will eventually come around.

To give her confidence in the beginning, when she wanted to go on the couch, she would put her paws on the couch and I would take her little hind paws and give her a heave ho, so she would think she could do it herself and I created a monster!@# Just joking...

Anyway, have to go...

More news to follow and keep your fingers crossed for my weekend up North!

Puppy mill dogs - owners share their experiences

We recently posted an up-date on Jill (now Lucky) a traumatized puppy mill dog that Eleven Eleven took on the feat of socializing and finding her a special home to work with her. Lucky is now doing great in her new home, and slowly coming out of her shell. See Lucky's up-dates and story by clicking here

With that post we had some other people share their experience with their own Puppy Mill dogs that they rescued and worked with. Helping a Puppy Mill dog explore their world and over come feats is a humbling and life changing experience. See their stories and response to Lucky (Jill) below:

Louise Makovsky: It is certainly special to have a puppymill dog. I remember when mine found a box of kleenex and thought it was amazing that she could keep pulling them out. One of the strongest memories was when she was taken out of the car and brought in front of my home she looked up at the sky and wagged her tail, I realized that she had probably never seen the sky...caged all of her life. Very touching. Good Luck Jill.

Shelly Elsliger: I have a rescued Boston Terrier from a back yard breeder who was kept in a cage in the basement for two years. we have had her for two years now..a little love bug who runs the house with joy and bliss and constant tail wagging....She still willl not go in the basement..understandably so...nice thing now is that she doesn't have to and knows it:) There are soo many rescues that given the chance- can teach us humans so much about forgiveness, strength and unconditional love! Thanks you soo much....ElevenEleven Animal rescue is truly making miracles happen and creating happy endings!

Porscha Adopted!

Porscha was rescued in November and after 4 months has now bee ADOPTED! She is a true survivor and was the vicitim of for profit breeding. Because of the negelctful conditions she was kept in and poor genetics Porscha has NO tear production. She arrived with leathery dry eyes, the docotors did not even belive they would be able to recover. But this little mircale worker, worked her maigic along with intensive eye treatments and a fantastic foster mom Porscha slowly regained her vision! She however will never have tear production, and for the rest of her life will always be on eye ointments. Even with that Porscha was able to find an EXCEPTIONAL home, with a new sister! She is one lucky pup and is now finally getting the second chance at life so many people have fought for her to have. Thank you to her beyond amazing foster mum Leesa, and the amazing adoptive home who looked past her special needs and what what we all saw, just Porshca a perfect little flawless pup.

***Porscha was resturned to the rescue, see here.

New Arrival - Jill

Jill:

Age: Young
Sex: Female
Breed: Shih-Tzu cross (Hypoallergenic)
Size: Small
Date Rescued: January 31st 2009
Not Recommended: Children under 14

Jill is a survivor. Jill has suffered and survived the torture of being in a puppy mill at the mercy of a human for the greed of making money to produce that cute puppy you see at the pet store. She was one of many surrendered by the puppy mill who no longer had use for them. However unlike all the others Jill remains the most reserved, she is in short petrified of humans (For very good reasons). However despite how scared she is, she has no mean bone in her. She needs work, a lot of work and someone willing to help bring her out of her shell and undo all the wrongs and injustice she has suffered at the hands of humans. She is a sweet heart, and is just waiting for that special person to spoil her with love and show her that us humans ‘aint all that bad!

Recent Puppy Mill Seizure / Foster homes needed

11-11 took a tour of some of the recent puppy mill dogs at The SPCA today. Lets just say it took us 3 hours to go through them all, there are so many right now. The small breeds are mostly great tempered, however there was one little girl who won out hears over. Jill was hovering in a corner and petrified of people or being touched, so we took her in the rescue! She obviously needed the extra TLC and we could not leave her behind. She is now being foster my one of the team members, Caroline. We also plan to take on a few more.. but we need foster homes! This is were YOU come into play, if you have ever thought about fostering NOW IS THE TIME. These pups need YOUR help. Besides the small dogs, there are also about 40 large golden/husky crosses. Most very well socialized but many absolutely scared of people, however very curious! They just need someone with a little patience willing to pull them out of their shells (We are unable to post pictures of them because they are still in court with the previous owner).

We will also be taking on a 3 legged pregnant husky from them, ready to give birth literally any day now! She will also be fostered within the team by Joanne.
